Who we are

UpLift is an international film festival curated and organised by students from the Department of Literature, Film and Theatre Studies (LiFTS) at the University of Essex. Each year, the festival showcases innovative film work from around the world while creating a space for discussion, creativity, and community. In addition to screenings, UpLift hosts workshops, panels, interactive activities, and themed events that encourage students and filmmakers to explore cinema through fresh perspectives.

Now in its fourth edition, UpLift centres its programming around the theme of comfort—examining how film can provide reassurance, emotional refuge, and connection in challenging times. This year’s festival is dedicated to creating a welcoming, calming, and inclusive environment for all students. Through its selection of films, supportive activities, and community-focused atmosphere, UpLift seeks not only to celebrate filmmaking but also to offer a comforting space where students can relax, reflect, and feel uplifted together. We wish to help you immerse yourself in the world of cinema and find the perfect film to comfort your interests.
